Varicocele

What is a Varicocele?

A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum, similar to varicose veins that occur in the legs. This condition affects approximately 15% of all men and up to 40% of men with fertility issues.

The condition occurs when blood pools in the veins due to faulty valves, causing the veins to become enlarged and twisted. While varicoceles are generally harmless, they can cause discomfort and may impact fertility.

Key Facts:

  • Most common on the left side (90% of cases)

  • Often develops during puberty

  • May cause testicular atrophy

  • Leading cause of male infertility

  • Can be successfully treated with minimally invasive procedures
